ESCA - WRCC 201-8, RH Corstorphine 2nd 202-6

Saturday was gloomy and very overcast and when the drizzle started at about 12pm it looked like the game would be in doubt. As the drizzle eased Corstorphine won the toss and as expected invited Westquarter to bat. The dampness made the wicket lively and slowed the outfield so scoring was hard in the early overs and this was not helped when Captain Shoeb Farooqui was run out for only 2.

The first real partnership came between Hamad Mumtaz and Steve Sutton for the fourth wicket as they looked to work the ball and punish any loose deliveries. The pair had added 52 in just under 10 overs when Steve Sutton topped edged a rising delivery to the safe hands of the fielder at point. Hamad continued to accumulate runs and passed the 50 mark for the third consecutive week before he to top edged a delivery into the leg side and was caught for 53.

This left Adam Jeremiah to take up the attack with support from Colin Fox and Mohammad Sajid he guided the innings to the end and finished unbeaten on 42, his highest score for the club. This left Westquarter with a total of 201 for 8; a decent total but probably 20 - 30 less than it would have been given drier conditions.

As the pitch dried and the outfield became faster it was important that Westquarter took some early wickets. The first was duly delivered courtesy of the inform Jamil Zada and the safe hand s of Robert Sutton. With three of the front line bowlers straining muscles it looked very bleak for the home side as Hamad decided to bowl some leg spin due to injury.

This turned out to be an inspired decision as he mesmerised the batsmen taking the next three wickets whilst being backed up by the miserly bowling of Farooqui who only conceded 18 runs from his 10 overs. During this time Corstorphine's skipper McCarthy ploughed a lonely furrow and was effectively keeping the visitor's in the game before he hit a return catch to Mumtaz who dived forward to cling on to the ball. Unfortunately both umpires were unsighted so the batsman gave himself not out and wouldn't budge and despite the fielder confirming the catch neither of the umpires would give a decision against their skipper.

This in the end proved to be the turning point of the game as Westquarter's injured bowlers found it hard to contain the runs and two more wickets fell to the bowling of Colin Fox before Corstorphine reached their target with two overs to spare.
